Intention of Our PE Curriculum

Clitheroe St James’ CE Primary School offers a broad and balanced PE curriculum based on the needs of the children within our school. We intend to provide a high-quality, inclusive physical education curriculum which should inspire all pupils to achieve their educational and personal best. We intend to provide opportunities for pupils to become physically confident in a safe and secure environment, embedding fundamental movement skills, ensuring our children can participate in a broad range of physical activities. We intend to provide opportunities to compete in a range of sports and other physical activities to build character and help to embed values such as respect, determination, self belief, teamwork, passion and honesty. We intend to show the importance of physical activity at the heart of a physically, active life. We intend to develop the children physically, emotionally, cognitively and socially. Children will learn how to select and apply skills, tactics and compositional ideas to suit activities that need different approaches and ways of thinking. Ultimately, we intend to develop the children's character through PE so that they are ready for life beyond St James' CE Primary school.

Implementation of our PE Curriculum

To help us achieve our broad and balanced PE curriculum, we follow the Lancashire Scheme of Work for PE from EYFS through to Year 6 to ensure progression in all areas of physical literacy. EYFS concentrate on the five fundamental movement skills which are assessed at the end of the year. In KS1, we focus on fundamental movement skills by accessing a broad range of opportunities to extend their agility, balance and coordination, individually and with others. In KS2, we continue to apply and develop a broader range of skills, learning how to use them in different ways. They develop an understanding of how to improve in different physical activities and sports and learn how to evaluate and recognise their own success. Every child throughout school has two hours of directed PE curriculum time. The curriculum is adapted and support put in place to support children with SEND.

In addition to this, we work very closely with the Sainsbury's Your Games values and recognise and applaud on a half termly basis, those children who demonstrate the Spirit of the Games Values - Honesty, Passion, Respect, Self-Belief, Determination and Teamwork.

We work alongside outside agencies who help to ensure high-quality provision of the PE curriculum. Children are taught the importance of keeping their bodies healthy and active within PE lessons promoting health and wellbeing through character education.

Impact of our PE Curriculum

At Clitheroe St James’ CE Primary School, our children are enthusiastic about their PE learning and taking part in lessons. Children are active during the school day and all children's achievements are valued. Children make informed decisions about the importance of exercise in their wider life during school, after school and in adulthood. Children know how to improve, set targets for themselves and compete against others individually and as team members. Children have the knowledge to achieve their potential.

Through our Sport Council, Pupil questionnaires indicate that children look forward to their PE lessons and feel they have a large and varied choice of extra-curricular activities. The impact of the curriculum is evidenced in our assessment of core tasks with the majority of our children working at or above the expected level of attainment. The engagement with our PE curriculum is clearly evidenced in our award of the Primary Kite Mark Silver Award.

PRIMARY PE AND SPORTS FUNDING

Schools are allocated a sum of money called the Primary PE and Sport Funding to support all children and improve the quantity, quality and breadth of PE and Sports provision. The allocation is calculated according to the intake of the school and the school must decide how best to use the money to improve the breadth and quality of PE and sport provision, including increased participation in PE and sport so that all pupils develop healthy lifestyles and reach their personal best.

Our Primary PE and Sport Funding for 2023/24 is £16,000 plus £10 per pupil. At present, we have 281 children on role which means that our total Sports Premium funding is £18 810

At Clitheroe St James’ Primary School, the Headteacher, PE governor and PE lead have spent time considering the provision already in place and areas of development, based on the 5 key indicators.

School Games Values

In PE, we are concentrating on the school games values which are: determination, self-belief, passion, respect, teamwork and honesty. Through PE lessons and competition, the children can learn how to handle victory and defeat, how to believe in their abilities and achieve their personal best and how to respect their opponents and work with their team-mates to achieve success.

Well done to all our children for showing the values in their PE lessons but particularly the children pictured below who received certificates for their efforts this half term.
